The Eddy Family Association Inc. was organized at Eddyville, Massachusetts on September 15, 1920 and incorporated on October 29, 1923. The story of how our family formed an association was told by Ruth Story Eddy in the 1930 book "The Eddy Family in America". She writes "One day in the late summer of 1920 John Hardenbergh Eddy and his brother James Williamson Eddy were lunching together in Boston, when the late George Winslow Eddy, a member of a wholly different branch of the Eddys, joined them and the conversation turned upon the various branches of the Eddy family. It was the year of preparation for the great Tercentennial at Plymouth and the thoughts of New Englanders were more or less centered upon their earliest ancestors in this country, so that it was quite natural for these three men to recall that 1930 would be the tercentennial of the landing of John and Samuel Eddy at Plymouth, and to agree that it would be worth while to celebrate that event. To do this successfully it would be necessary to enlist the aid of all branches of the descendants. This idea was suggested to several representatives of other branches, who lived in or near Boston; namely to Mr. Lyman Kinsley Eddy, Rev. David Brewer Eddy, the late Dr. Samuel Breck of Eddyville, Mass, and the late Clinton Lucius Eddy. These were delighted with the idea and Mr. Breck suggested that a meeting of the Eddys be held at his home in Eddyville, Mass. where a family organization might be formed. Accordingly letters were sent to all Eddys living in near-by towns, inviting them to come to a meeting at Eddyville on Sept 15, 1929. At that meeting the Eddy Family Association was formed and Rev. David Brewer Eddy was chosen to serve as the first President." |
