Grandma Eddy, who in her day was one of the most hospitable of entertainers and
always good hearted and kind, passed to the land beyond early this morning. Her

request that she be laid beside him in the old churchyard. Accordingly the body
was embalmed and will be shipped to Maine for interment. Grandma was 75 years
old. She has one daughter, Mrs. Armine Blackman, and two sons, Nelson and Will
Eddy, all residents of this county. Services will be held at the home of

THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN GIVEN TO ME THROUGH SEVERAL PERSONS WHO ARE RELATED TO THIS FAMILY.
Nelson Eddy

THE SPELLING OF THE SURNAME OF EDDY ARE FOUND IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, SUCH AS ADDY; EADES, EDY, EDDE, EADS, EDDY EDDIE EDIE AND PERHAPS MORE.

Abraham Eades patented land on Ballengers Creek, Albemarle County, Virginia in 1751. It is likely that Abraham, Joseph and Jacob were brothers and there is a possibly he had a sister named Hannah who married a John Peter, Albermarle Co., Va.
Ref: Rev. Edgar Woods of Columbia, MO.

From a book found in Denver Co. Library "History of Albermarle Co." Eades a family named Eades were early settlers in Southern part of the County. Abraham Eades patented land on Ballengers Creek in 1751.

Abraham Eades was a Tobacco Inspector in the early part of the century. He died in 1828. Family were Joseph, Mildred (wife of a Shepard), Abraham, Susan Charlotte, and Sarah (wife of Richard Chandler), Shepard Eades, a son of one of the family married Mary, daughter of Benjamin Norvell, and left a son Shepard and three daughters, Mary (wife of a Starke), Charlotte (wife of a Turner), and Sarah (wife of a Venable)

Samuel Gray is descendant of Isaac Eads who married Sarah Bible in Amherset County, Virginia in 1799. He died in Stokes County in 1817. Isaac is a nae missing from the Eades family to make this a complete descendency like the one of the Bible as mentioned in subject heading above. An Abraham Eades was in Goochland County, Virginia early in the century, this is probably before that part of Goochland became Albermarle County. Some of Albremarle County became Amherst County, so it is possible that this family had lived in the same place and listed all three Counties.

Joseph gave to his sons, Thomas and John, 150 acres on Totier Creek in Albermarle Co., Va. in 1758 and the next year Jacob Eades sold 300 acres to Rev. Ramsey. It is likely Abraham, Jacob and Joseph were brothers with the later two disappear from the records and may have gone elsewhere.

John Edy born in Scotland came to America by way of Virginia under the authority of a Col. Cater of the Northern Neck of Virginia in 1725, who would pay John Edy's way to America and thus John would become his indentured servant until his debt was paid. John Edy was unable to pay his debt and he was placed in the hoscow (jail) and all his Carpentrey tools were auctioned off to cover his debt to Col. Carter. After John Edy was released from his confinement he and several other Scot-Irish men and their families went to the West side of what was know as Round Mountain or (Hill), Virginia because this area looked most like their homeland. This area is now known as Clarke County, Virginia and according to the local history of the county there were about 250 Scotsman who settled there.

Soon after John Edde married Mrs. Frances (Stringer) Via, widow of David Via, they purchased 100 acres of land in Rockingham Co., a. All four children (By Hannah Jones Wife #1) were mentioned in Thomas Harrison's will 4-10-1815 and were given $50.00 each, Thomas Harrison was a Revolutionary Soldier serving in Captain William Strother Jones (his wife's first cousin ) 1 reason Thomas Harrison's Hannah (Jones) dies ca 1777 and he takes leave to come home & try to come to some solution for these above babies. I also reason, because of the marriage of Elizabeth Harrison to my GGG grandfather John Edde Jr. 5-14-1793 Bath Co. Va., Elizabeth was taken in by "Uncle Gabriel Jones" in Rockingham Co., Va., John Edde Sr. and family lived near Gabriel at the time. While Thomas Harrison on leave proving a home for his children, he strikes up a new Romance with a close neighbor's daughter one Hannah Dennis and later (4-7-1779) they marry and have a family.

Obituary: of John Edde
John Edde was born March 12, 1831 in Warren Co., Tennessee and came with his parents to what is now Hickory Co., Mo. In 1842. He was united in marriage to Harriet Alsup July 27, 1853. To this union were born ten children, 6 of whom are still living, Sarah A. Simmons, Eliza Alexander, Nathan Edde, Joe T. Edde, Charles E. Edde and Albert P. Edde who live near Nemo and Preston. Bro. Edde professed faith in Christ as his Savior during a meeting held by Rev. Holman at or near the place where the widow of the late Joseph Riffle now lives, some 50 years ago. While he never united with a church he lived upright and constant Christian life and offen told his family and friends during his long afflictions and suffering that he was ready to go to meed his Savior. To live was Christ and to die was gain. He died April 30, 1913 and after the services by Rev. H. L. Parrack he was laid to restin the Fisher Cemetery.

Notes for JAMES EDDY:
James Eddey-Eldest Son of John of Woodbridge
James' will located in the NJ will section in Trenton clearly spells his name with the extra e. See footnote 8
for the text and the exact spellings.
James Eddy, son of John, inherited land from his father in Woodbridge and died there. He and his wife are
buried in the old Presbyterian Church burial ground (near the train station) in Metuchen, NJ. He is thought to
have been a farmer in his early years, but then became a town official (like his youngest brother Samuel did in
the Marsh Creek settlement) later on. His wife was from Scotland, as was his mother in law. The Scottish
connections are quite strong. They were members of the Upper Presbyterian church in Woodbridge. William
Simonson Eddy states at one point that they were Quakers!
John William Edie writes in his genealogy (without references however) that James Eddy had frequent contact
with the Edies living in the Marsh Creek settlement in PA. James is listed several times in the book
"Woodbridge and Vicinity; The Story of a New Jersey Township", by Rev Joseph W. Dally. He is a
moderator for the Freeholders' meetings. He is listed as keeping the records when the clerk, T. Gage dies.
The only other item known about James is that he was a private in the Revolutionary War. He is listed on the
DAR burial plaque in the burial ground in Metuchen, NJ as being a private in the Middlesex County Militia.
We do not have much information about his wife, Mary Gach except that she has 11 children and is thought
to be a Quaker by William Simonson Eddy. John of Woodbridge has 12 children, 10 from Elizabeth his first
wife and two from Janet his second wife. Mary's mother's maiden name is Bloodgood. There are many
Bloodgoods buried where she is buried.

Notes for GAVIN/GAWEN EDDY:
Gayon or Gavin Eddy, Third Oldest son of John of Woodbridge
The following was taken from the Heady Family Newsletter. It is included in this document because it
provides some information on Gavin, the third oldest son of John of Woodbridge.
"The stream now known as Tonoloway Creek, but called 'Konolawa' by the Indians living along its bank and
'The Conolloways' by the white settlers, follows a meandering course through the southern part of present Foulton
(sic) county, Pennsylvania, crossing the boundary line into Maryland about three miles before it joins the
Potomac at a point just below that river's northernmost bend. The Big and Little Tonoloway Settlements lay
about five miles north of the Potomac along branches of Tonoloway Creek and immediately west of the large and
small basins named, respectively, the Great (Big) Cove and Little Cove. These settlements had been founded by a
few Scotch-Irish Immigrants, at least one Welch family (that of Evan Shelby), and a band of Monmouth and
Middlesex county, New Jersey families, which included those of Moses Graham, William Linn, Joseph Warford,
Adam Stiger, John Melott, Benjamin Truas, Elias, Richard, Jeremiah Stillwell, Thomas Heady, GAVIN EDDY,
Samuel Hedden the Coombs, Belieus, Applegates and, no doubt, others. Whether the Monmouth and Middlesex
county families came as a unit or over a period of several years, is not known, but they were all there by 1765 or
earlier.
The precise date of the first settlement on the Tonoloways is difficult to establish. Some historians claim that
settlers arrived as early as 1731, but others assert that 1741 was a more realistic date. The STILLWELL
FAMILY HISTORY states that one source places Elias Stillwell, husband of Meriam Eddy and the older brother
of Gavin Eddy, on the Tonoloways as early as 1735. Although that seems a bit early to us, other families can be
proved to have been in the area by that time, so it may be true that he was there that early. The settlers purchased
the land on which they settled from the Indians, and reportedly, had little trouble with them until 1750, in which
year the Indians appealed to the proprietory government of Pennsylvania for the return of their lands, alledging
they had been defrauded by a few trinkets and other items of little value, and drawing attention to the fact that
settlement west of the Kittantinny mountains was a violation of the treaty in effect at that time. At length, the
Pennsylvania authorities responded by sending out magistrates, accompanied by troops, to drive the settlers off
their lands in the Great Cove. Most of the settlers pleaded guilty of settling on unpurchased lands, paid their fines
and returned to their lands as soon as the magistrates left. Since the Little Cove and the Big and Little
Tonoloways were on the borders of Maryland 'the magistrates declined going there, and departed for their homes.'
After Braddock's defeat at Pittsburg in 1755, the Indians began raiding throughout the frontiers. They
revenged themselves on the Great Cove on the first of November 1755, and raided the Tonoloways on the 28th of
January 1756. According to the PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE issue of February 12, 1756, 'they killed and
scalped James Leaton, Catherine Stillwell and one of her children were killed and scalped, and two others carried
off; one about eight, the other three years old. Her husband was at a neighbor's house when his wife was attacked
and from thence got into Coom's fort'. Catherine Stillwell was the wife of Richard Stillwell. There was also a
great loss of cattle, and horses and many houses were burned.
Apparently, about this time there was some attempt by Maryland, as well, to drive the settlers off the
Tonoloways. A petition dated September 29, 1755, was sent to Governor Morris from the settlers setting forth
that 'these few lines to inform you we are very much imposed upon by ye Sherfe of frederick county in meryland
in Comeing to take our Lands from us by a Maryland Right which we have had surveyed by Mr. William Lyon
Surveyor under Mr John Armstrong surveyor for Cumberland County in pensylvania Last Spring....said Sherive
peter butler has got surveyed by bringing a Captain and a parcel of souldars to Gard him while he was do
doing....Threats were made by him that in two or three weeks he would come back and take all the land from the
Forks of Tonolaways Crick down to ye mouth thereof, and all goods, chattels, horses, or anything he could find.'
The scanty Baptist church records are the best records we have of the members of the Tonoloway Settlement.
Adjacent to the property then owned by ELIAS STILLWELL is the old Tonoloway Baptist Church which was
attended by most of the settlers of British extraction and some others. Although the tombstones in its churchyard
are its only extant records, they are often the means of connecting the pioneers buried there with their past.
Unfortunately for us, there are no Heady stones, but many of the Stillwells and Truaxs still stand. Thus in their
desire for freedom, privacy and an autogenous government, the settlers left few records of their early settlement
along the Tonoloways. Once the Mason-Dixon line was established and the settlers were sure to which state they
belonged, it became desirable for them to insure their claims to the land they had occupied for ten to thirty years.
From the beginning 'with the exception of a brief interval from 1761 to 1768, the system of obtaining title to land
in Pennsylvania was by warrant. Under this system the land applied for must be paid in advance, which, even at
the low price of land, many were not able to do. To meet this difficulty and to encourage rapid settlement and
3

improvement, the proprietaries, in 1761, established a system of taking land on 'application' by which land was
sold on indefinite credit, the purchase money running at low rate of interest, and to be a lien on the land. This
system remained in vogue until 1769' and under it Thomas Heady and most of the other settlers obtained title to
the land they occupied. That accounts for the fact that the warreant and patent were not issued on Thomas
Heady's 117 acres until it fell into the hands of William Bishop and Bishop, in 1836, paid $26.00 to Pennsylvania
for the purchase and interest."

3. MARIEM/MERIAM2 EDDY (JOHN1) was born January 25, 1708/09 in Woodbridge, NJ, and died October 19,
1803 in Hancock, MD. She married ELIAS STILLWELL. He was born Abt. 1708 in NJ, and died February 04,
1792 in Hancock, MD.
Notes for MARIEM/MERIAM EDDY:
Meriam (Maryan) Eddy: Secondest oldest daughter of John of Woodbridge
Meriam Eddy, second daughter of John Eddy and Elizabeth Edwards of Woodbridge, New Jersey, was born
in Woodbridge, New Jersey January 29, 1708. She married Elias Stillwell, of English extraction, who was born
in NJ in 1708 and died near Hancock, Maryland. Meriam survived her husband and died at the same place,
October 19, 1803, aged 95 years. Both are buried in the Tonoloway Baptist Cemetery, near Hancock, Maryland.
After marriage, Meriam moves with her husband to Maryland. They think that it is in Maryland but are
surprised to find out that when the Mason Dixon Line is marked, they are north of the border. Meriam is not that
far away from her father and her youngest brothers who make up some of the settlers of the Marsh Creek Area. It
is very important to point out that even though they move from NJ, they are actually moving close to some of her
family. A quick look at a Maryland map demonstrates the Marsh Creek settlement being less than 100 miles from
Hancock, Maryland. And the Marsh Creek settlement borders Frederick County. Also in the same settlement is
her younger brother, Gavin! Her husband, Elias Stillwell, was one of the organizers of the Tonoloway Baptist
Church which was built in 1752 (and was baptized there in 1753 by the Rev. Samuel Heaton.)
Both Meriam and her husband's tombstones were standing in the church graveyard as of 1938. The epitaph
on Meriam's headstone reads (read) as follows: 'My loving mate I did survive, and, true, my age was great, I lived
the years of ninety-five, but here, behold my fate.' Her marker is classic for the time period.

She was a Scotch woman who was a great doctress, and who judging by her handwriting was a woman of
education and culture.
Her tombstone says the following: In Memory of Mariam Stillwell Wife of Elias Stillwell Esq. Who departed this

Where behold my fate (This inscription was sent to me by Scott Duncan email: maizeblue6@onemain.com on 19
May 2001) I went to the cemetery myself in July 2002 the marker is very faded but can still be read fairly well.
I found the following inscription in a book entitled: "The History of Captain Nicholas Stillwell son of Lieutenant
Nicholas Stillwell and his Descendants" by John E. Stillwell, M.D., published in 1930, Mariam Stillwell departed
this life Oct. 19, 1803 aged 95 years My loving mate I did survive And true my age was great, I lived the years of

Biographical Sketch
William A. Eddy was born in Sidon, Syria, on March 9th, 1896. He was graduated from Princeton in 1917, the year in which he married Mary Garvin. His A.M. and Ph.D were also from Princeton. In WWI he was badly wounded at Belleau Wood and received many citations. From 1922-1936 he taught English at Peekskill Military Academy and Dartmouth College, and was chairman of the department of English at the American University, Cairo. In 1936 he was called to be president of Hobart College. With the outbreak of the second World War he offered his services again to the Marines, was commissioned a Major and was made a full colonel in the staff of Mark Clark. In 1942 Eddy was Naval Attache in Tangier, and was instrumental in the planning of the Allied North African landings. In 1944 he resigned from the Marine Corps to become Minister Plenipotentiary to Saudi Arabia. Fluent in Arabic (and French), he acted as interpreter for President Roosevelt and King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia during the historic meeting in the Suez Canal, and was key in developing the U.S. treaty with The Yemen in 1946. He served in the OSS and CIA for the remainder of his life, and was also a full-time consultant for the Arabian-American Oil Company. He died at his home in Beirut in 1962.

Introduction
The papers of William A. Eddy (1896-1962), educator, diplomat, minister to Saudi Arabia, intelligence agent, and college president, focus on his presidency of Hobart College (1936-1941), his work in U.S. - Middle East policy, and his family life in the period from 1917-1962. The holdings of his personal and family correspondence is extensive. The collection contains all correspondence from his term as president of Hobart College, 1936-1941. Many military documents are included, especially in the years 1941-1946 (the planning of the North African landings, the FDR/Ibn Saud meeting, the Treaty of the Yemen). There are many geneological papers and letters from Eddy's relatives concerning American missionary work in the Middle East. There are numerous publications concerning 18th C. English literature, religious and civic duties, U.S. Foreign policy re Israel and the Arabs, and sociological accounts of the Middle East. The collection is composed of personal/professional correspondence, documents, diaries and notebooks, addresses, publications, manuscripts of Eddy's books and articles (including unpublished MSs), scrapbooks, photographs, negatives, and memorabilia.

The Papers were in the possession of his wife, Mary Garvin Eddy, who donated the papers in 1978. Personal correspondence from 1914-1918, 1935, and the 1940s was donated by his daughter, Mary Garvin Eddy Furman, in 1991.

Orrin Eddy was born on January 26, 1826 in Chautauqua Co., New York to John Phillip and Susan Hancock Eddy. Soon after the birth of Orrin, the family moved to Lorain County, OH and later to Washtenaw County, Michigan. In 1937, John bought land in London Township, Monroe County, Michigan which was later sold to Ephraim and Orrin Eddy. John also bought land in Augusta township, Washtenaw County and was living there with his wife Susan and daughter Susan during the 1850 Federal census.
A settlement was made in 1851 of property in the Estate of Hannah Eddy from Wausaw, Wyoming County, New York with John Eddy. Orrin's father John died abt 1855 reference tax records for London Township in 1855. It is believed that John is buried next to his wife Susan in the Raeighville (Poole-Townsend) cemetery in Section 3 of London Township. His mother Susan died on June 2, 1871 and is buried in this cemetery.
Orrin and Asenath apparently remained living in London Township, Monroe County after John's death as Orrin, Asenath, Myron and Calvin are listed in the 1860 census for this township. Susan Hancock Eddy, Orrin's mother also apparently remained in the area as she died and was buried in London Township in 1871. The Minnesota census records of 1965 indicate that Orrin was living in Amherst Township, Fillmore County and that his sons Myron, Calvin and Ethan had all been born in the State of Michigan. Orrin apparently migrated to Minnesota in 1863\64 during the time of the Civil War and was farming and working for his brother, Ethan in Amhurst Township where his bother had settled in 1853. Hulda, the only daughter of Asenath and Orrin Eddy was born in 1865 in Lenora, Fillmore County. The census records for 1870 also indicated that Orrin and his family were still living in Fillmore County at this time. However, the 1875 State census records indicate that Orrin and his family was now living in Delevan Township, Faribault County, Minnesota and was farming near Bass lake. On March 7, 1882, Orrin died and was buried thru the Presbyterian church at the Bass lake cemetery.
Asenath and her family then moved to Elk River, Minnesota where they are shown on the 1885 Census records. Calvin and his family moved to Sherburne County also and are listed as living in Big Lake. In the 1895 census, Myron and his family and Calvin and his family were listed as living at Big Lake. However, it is noted that Asenath's son Ethan had died sometime during 1883, location and cause unknown. Asenath remained in Sherburne County and died at her daughter Hulda Brown's residence on October 8, 1924 in Livonia Township. She is buried at the Orono Cemetery in Elk River along with Hulda Brown and her family. (Bruce S. Milton Research)

Zachariah Eddy b. July 23, 1720, in Swansea, Mass.; d. before Aug. 7, 1781, when his will, dated June 6, 1780, was proved; m. Marcy Burch of Stonington, Conn., on May 9, 1741, according to Stonington Rec., but May 9, 1743, according to Arnold's V.R. of Smithfield where name is spelled Burik. She was b. Aug. 18, 1717 at Stonington; dau. of Jonathan and Mary (Rathbun) Burch (Stonington Rec.).

From Swansea Zachariah went to R. I. with his father, Joshua, and settled in Glocester. About the time of his marriage his father, Joshua, bought some land in the northwestern part of Connecticut, and Zachariah left RI and settled in Salisbury, upon a portion of this land.

(Salisbury Land Records, Vol. I, p. 356) Joshua Eddy of Providence, R. I., sold to "my well-beloved son Zachariah Eddy of Salisbury, Conn. . . . two parcels of land containing 200 acres in the first lot of land which was laid out in the 4th Division of land granted, to be laid out in Salisbury, to Sharon bounds." Dated Sept. 23, 1745.

(Salisbury Land Rec., Vol. II, p. 42) Joshua Eddy of Glocester, R. I., yeoman, sold to "Zachariah Eddy of Salisbury, Conn., Husbandman, . . . about 100 acres in a place called the Great Hollow, being the ninth lot in the third division of the town and on the Sharon boundary." Dated Sept. 24, 1746.

(Salisbury Land Rec., Vol. II, p. 127) Joshua Eddy sold "to my loving son, Zachariah Eddy of Salisbury, 1/3 of one right in undivided land of the proprietary of Salisbury." Dated Oct. 11, 1748.

Whether Zachariah Eddy did not find success attending his endeavors is not known, but for some reason he returned to R. I. in 1749.

(Glocester Rec.) John and Obadiah Brown sold to Zachariah Eddy of Salisbury in the County of New Haven in Conn., on Oct. 10, 1749, 200 acres in Glocester, besides meadow. The bounds mention Richard Waterman, Benjamin Waterman, Samuel Winsor and Resolved Waterman and heirs of John Tracy.

Sometime before 1759 Zachariah received from his father a portion of his estate which was in the town of Johnston, probably its northernmost part, adjacent to Glocester. Here he lived for a while but on Sept. 3, 1759, he sold to William Hawkins a part of this farm, namely the land opposite Job Waterman's farm, "an estate of inheritance and is the farm where I now Dwell." (Johnston Deeds, Book 1, 21.)

(Note. When Mary, the wife, signed off her dower rights, sometimes she spelled her name Mary and at others Marcy.)

In 1763 Zachariah Eddy of Johnston, Yeoman, bought for 1000 pounds from Benjamin Waterman, Jr., 175 acres in Johnston west of Gideon Waterman's and is the farm left to Benjamin by his grandfather Benjamin Waterman. (Johnston Deeds.)

On the Military Lists of R. I. Zachariah Eddy of Johnston appears as a Lieutenant in 1761-1762 and as Captain in 1763-1765.

Two years later, Zachariah Eddy, now called Capt. Zachariah, bought another piece in Johnston south of Zachariah Eddy's sawmill, and this same year 1765, Zachariah Eddy of Johnston, gentleman, sold to Benjamin Waterman of Conn. some of his land in Johnston. Richard Eddy witnessed this deed. During this period Zachariah Eddy's name appears on the deed of John Brown to Aaron Dor, and the deed of Joseph Field to Daniel Eddy.

About 1766 Zachariah Eddy left RI again and this time found a home in northern MA at Belchertown. He was established there by Jan. 15, 1767, when he bought 257 acres in Wilbraham (Springfield Deeds, 8, 83). The following year, Zachariah Eddy of Belchertown bought land in Springfield on the east side of the Connecticut River, "land originally granted to Mr. Holyoke." Dated Nov. 7, 1768. (Springfield Rec. 8, 384.) This piece of land he sold the following year, to G. Williston of Brookfield (Springfield Rec., 8, 462) and he also parted with the land in Wilbraham the same year. From this time on he confined his purchases of land to Belchertown. In 1776 he bought a piece on the south west of a hill called Turkey Hill, which on Aug. 7, 1777 he sold "unto my son Abner Eddy of Belchertown" about 100 acreas and the bounds mention Silvanus How.; Capt. Stacy; Martin Bardwell; Phinehas Smith and Joseph Bardwell.

He was too old for active service in the Revolutionary War, but he served on the Committee of Safety in 1776 (Historical Address at the Centennial Celebration of East Hampton, Mass. given by Payson W. Lyman on July 4, 1876 and printed at Springfield 1877: p. 89). Moreover on the twelfth day of the 12th month "The town (Belchertown) voted 10 sh. 8d. for Capt. Zachariah Eddy for his horse's journey to Providence to fetch powder for the town's use."

He died in Belchertown, Mass. His will mentions Mercy Eddy, my wife; son, Danield; son Newbury; dau. Rhoda, dau. Anna; son Asaph who is made the sole executor. In the latter part of the will the wife is called Mary Eddy. The witnesses of the will were Isaac Stacy and Elizabeth Stacy and Amasa Scott. It was probated Aug. 7, 1781 (Probate of Hampshire Co., 13-418).
